PRODUCTION ADVISORY SERVICES: FOCUS ON COMMERCIAL AND COMMUNAL AREAS
The National Wool Growers’ Association (NWGA) is one of the few agricultural producer organisations in South Africa that offers specialised production advisory services to wool producers. These services are designed to meet the distinct needs of both commercial and communal farmers, with the goal of improving productivity, profitability, and sustainability across the industry.
Expert production advisors deliver these services through a combination of one-on-one consultations, on-farm visits, study groups, training sessions, and information days. Training includes sheep handling, wool classing, farm management analysis, and shearer development, with the added benefit of exposure visits and agricultural tours.
In support of sustainable farming practices, NWGA production advisors also conduct Sustainable Cape Wool Standard (SCWS) farm audits at no cost to the producer. These services are accessible to all wool producers, regardless of scale.
In commercial farming areas, the focus is on enhancing the profitability and resilience of wool enterprises through the adoption of world-class production technologies and practices. The NWGA actively assists commercial producers in maximising favourable market conditions and encourages sheep farmers to transition to wool production where appropriate, with the potential to significantly increase national wool output.
The organisation also investigates and addresses key threats to wool farming, including predation, stock theft, mining encroachment, wool contamination, and land-use competition. A strong emphasis is placed on workforce development, ensuring that farm workers and shearers receive relevant, high-quality training. Responsible wool production remains a cornerstone of NWGA’s advisory approach, supported by regular updates to the national Code of Best Practice in alignment with global standards.
In communal farming regions, the NWGA plays a vital developmental role. A genetic improvement programme in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture supports the enhancement of wool quality, ensuring that producers in these areas can compete effectively in formal markets. Market readiness and access are prioritised to increase the volume of wool sold through the auction system, which translates directly into higher income for producers.
Comprehensive training and mentorship programmes are offered to improve farming skills and technical knowledge, while the collection and analysis of production and profitability data provides critical insights for informed decision making and long-term sustainability.
Through this integrated advisory service, the NWGA ensures that all wool producers – commercial and communal – benefit from expert support and industry-leading knowledge, enabling them to thrive in a competitive and evolving agricultural landscape.
